Electronic Publishing and Production at CambridgeDigital technology has brought authors and publishers exciting new opportunities to reach new readers and expand the market for all types of books. Keeping books in printCambridge is taking full advantage of the recent advances in digital production methods to keep books in print for as long as there is a demand for them, however modest. Until very recently, reprints weren't viable once sales had fallen below a certain level. We are now also in a position to reissue print editions of books that may have been long out-of-print. Cambridge prints digitally both with specialist partners and at our own University Printing House facilities. Cambridge has been in the forefront of discussions with many of the new online distributors and is using its expertise to identify the sort of partnerships that will bring genuine benefit to the author and publisher both financially and in terms of reaching new markets. Electronic publishing is still a relatively new medium, but there is a clear demand from a global readership for the facilities offered by digital technology. Libraries in particular appreciate the potential for giving their users better access to their collection than is possible with a single printed edition of a book. Individual readers may browse an online catalogue, identify a title of interest and obtain it almost immediately on their computer. An advanced search facility helps the user to find the exact information required, and it is usually possible to annotate the title with personal notes and make copies of extracts of interest.
